The most important match of the season for our current champions of the Major Football League of Ukraine took place on Sunday, September 25. It lasted about four hours under the bright sun and sometimes the clouds. Uzhgorod "Lumberjacks" played with Kyiv "Bandits" for the final.
The "home" match of the club from Uzhgorod once again took place not in their hometown. They played in Perechyn. Therefore, few fans supported our champions during the highly emotional and tense game. As they say, even walls help at home. And the "athletes in exile" without those "walls", namely the support of the hometown, unfortunately, lost to the team from Kyiv. As a result, the match ended with the score 28:36 in favor of "Bandits."Thus, "Lumberjacks" will compete for the bronze medals of the championship – they will play for the third place with the winners of the other semifinal.
Uzhgorod.in already wrote about the strange situation with games in Uzhgorod. The team cannot paly at the city stadium, because of the self-proclaimed monopoly of soccer players. Such attitude to one of the most successful sports clubs of Transcarpathia is incomprehensible.
Here is what one of the players of the club, famous showman Tudor Kilaru wrote on the eve of the game: "I know that for many people, it is a strange, useless sport, which is difficult to understand. But for several generations of sports enthusiasts this game is worth all those bumps, bruises, abrasions, sprains and even fractures. It is the reason to go on the field at 3 degrees in the drain in Nyiregyhaza or at 39 degree heat in Odesa. It is an adrenaline. It is a feeling that you are standing for much more than 300 fans at the match in Baranyntsi. You are standing for honor. The honor of your city, even if it doesn’t love you or your team back."
After the match Tudor said: "My heart aches. If we had played at home, we could have won."
Journalist Oleksandra Artyukhina commented on the match in Perechyn and the situation with the club in general:
"I am very disheartened that our city (or rather, its leadership) does not care about sports achievements. and not only in American football (but in many other sports too). We are talking about some ambitions. And stereotypes about "120-kilogram men who ruin fields". It is a pity that these guys selflessly fight for the honor of Uzhgorod, but do not have basic support. Of course, everything is subjective. And there is a large group of people standing by you, guys, Uzhgorod Lumberjacks, no matter what. So, Uzhgorod, I hope that in the match for the bronze medals on October 8, we can prove that we stand by our CHAMPIONS!!! And we will come to support them. You know, I am not very versed in this sport, do not know the rules, but it’s so entertaining! And we must cheer for our guys :)".
Let us hope that this is exactly what will happen, and there will be the place for all kinds of sports in Uzhgorod, especially such spectacular and successful ones!
