On July 14, the official opening ceremony of the World Water Sports Championship took place in the center of Budapest, on a floating stage in the middle of the Danube. Europe has not seen such spectacle for a long time, the Mukachevo.net informs.
Opposition Hungarian media have already said that excessive spending can be the cause for the country’s largest corruption scandal.
The press report that such show cost a fairly large amount. The exact sum is not known to anyone. However, everyone agrees that holding the championship may hurt the Hungarian budget.
The 2-hour-long opening ceremony with 500 participants cost 3.4 billion forints (11 million euros).
It is known that the government allocated 49 billion forints (182,500,000 USD) for the preparation and holding of the World Championship. This is twice the amount that was planned initially. In particular, the "Danube arena" alone cost more than 40 billion forints, 17 billion forints was spent for the reconstruction of other facilities.
The Hungarian press writes that the winners of the tenders were eight companies whose owners are close to the government and Viktor Orban personally.
In general, the championship can cost Hungary more than 170 billion forints, although this amount is not final, as the results of many purchases are still unknown. It is known that the cost of organization of the sporting event has increased in two years by approximately seven times compared to what was planned initially. Thus, the championship became the most expensive event in Hungary in all its modern history.
