Winged European giant lives in Transcarpathia

Scientists of the Uzhansky National Park "met" the largest European moth this summer while researching the entomofauna in the nature protection area, the Zelene Zakarpattya reported.

A very rare moth Saturnia pyri was found by researchers on the fringes of the Uzhansky park. The moth is truly worthy of the "Europe’s largest moth" status – male’s wingspan reaches 120 mm, female’s – 150 mm.

The researcher of the national park Nelia Koval says this is another unique representative of the lepidofauna in this protected area. At the beginning of this summer, entomologists found three more rare butterfly species of Ukraine: Satocala sponsa, Euchalcia variabilis and Hemaris tityus.
