Uzhgorod residents appeal to the Cabinet about the “reconstruction” of an architectural monument and systematic destruction of the city heritage (+ DRAFT OPEN LETTER)

The demolition of the house on Voloshin street – an old original building beloved by citizens and tourists – outraged the community of the regional center of Transcarpathia.

Yesterday we reported about the demolition of the building. And also asked questions about people responsible for that.

Today, in response to outrage and publicity, the prosecution office announced that a proceeding had been opened.

Meanwhile, activists, not relying on conscience and integrity of local officials, appeal to Kyiv. Here is the prepared draft open letter to the Cabinet and the central body of cultural heritage protection.

It was prepared by designer, known defender of historical and cultural monuments and Uzhgorod identity Oleg Olashyn.   Uzhgorod residents suggest to send the letter not only to the Cabinet in general, but also to relevant ministers – the Minister of Culture Nyshchuk and the Minister of Regional Development, Construction and Housing Zubko.

"Because of the inaction of local and regional institutions that are entrusted with protection of cultural heritage, the city is rapidly losing its unique architecture, valuable buildings and certain architectural monuments of local importance. Monuments of national importance are also under threat, as uncontrolled chaotic construction is being performed in protected zones. The traditional historic environment is being destroyed" – it is stated in the letter.

We invite to read the draft open letter, as its discussion continues and inputs from Uzhgorod residents are taken into account. You can follow it on the page of Oleg Olashyn, where you can read the full letter and in the group "Uzhgorod" on facebook.

PS Finally, the passport of the construction was placed at the site, which now is a pile of broken bricks. It shows that the building supposedly is to be recreated, however, it will look a little different, plus there will the second floor. But the authenticity is lost forever…

PPS And fresh photos of the remaining wall disprove lies of the city architecture department that the house was made of adobe and that is why it had to be destroyed, because otherwise the walls would not hold the second floor.
