Unique icon of the Savior will be brought to Uzhgorod from the Sistine Chapel

The acheiropaeic image of our Lord Jesus Christ will be brought to the Holy Cross Cathedral in Uzhgorod. This is a special icon of the Savior made miraculously by a non-human hand.

The history of the Image is enveloped by many legends. There are several versions of its origin, of which two are the most common. One of them tell about a righteous woman, Veronica, who wiped the face of Christ during the cross procession. The other one tells of healing of the Edessian king, Abgar, by the Savior’s face miraculously depicted on the cloth, Christ wiped his face with.

In the post of the Greek-Catholic Transcarpathia, it is said that scholars regard it as one of the most ancient images of the face of Christ that has survived to this day.

Christians regard this image as a special relic. In the chronicles, it is referred to as the Acheiropaeic Savior, the Holy Face, the Image of Edessa or Mandilion, which means "cloth".

Today, this icon is kept in the Pontifical Church of the Sistine Chapel. Each year, it is exhibited for worship after the Vespers on the 5th Sunday of the Great Lent in the Basilica of St. Apostle Peter, on the balcony above the monumental statue of St. Veronica, who holds the cloth with the imprint of Christ’s face.

The icon will be brought to the Holy Cross Cathedral in Uzhgorod on March 4, and will stay there until March 17.
