Transcarpathian village of Borzhavske has become the tomato capital of Ukraine

The village of Borzhavske in Vynogradiv district of Transcarpathian region is called the tomato capital of Ukraine, the fermer.blog writes. Tomatoes have been grown here for 30 years now.

From the bird’s eye view, one can see how large the area of greenhouses in this settlement is. The village of Borzhavske is completely covered with greenhouses. Every piece of land that can yield a crop is taken by vegetables. But tomatoes are the most popular crops here. Greenhouses appeared in Borzhavske in the 1960s, tomatoes have been grown for thirty years. The most favorite variety of tomatoes among the local farmers is Primadonna.

Farmer Mykhailo Kostak says that they begin to sow tomatoes around the New Year’s Eve, and gather harvest in the end of March. The harvesting will continue until October. Greenhouses are equipped with drip irrigation, water is fed from wells. Construction and equipment of one greenhouse costs $ 2 thousand.

Farmers supply finished products to the markets of Lviv and Mukachevo. Borzhavske tomatoes are also well known beyond the Carpathians. Vegetables are sold to wholesalers from Rivne, Zhytomyr, Lutsk and Volyn, the head of  Borzhavske village council Yuriy Bobita says.
