Transcarpathian rescuers ensure the safety of people on the Epiphany (VIDEO)

According to Christian tradition, on January 19 – the day of the great feast of Epiphany – many Transcarpathians perform a ritual of diving in water. Because, according to popular belief, on this day, the water acquires healing properties and can treat physical and spiritual ailments. So, today, in all settlements of Transcarpathia there were prayers, after which, in designated areas, people had the opportunity to plunge into the icy water.

The safety of parishioners during ritual activities is ensured by representatives of the rescue service in the region. Thus, during the sanctification of water in open bodies of water, rescuers were on duty near every bathing place, ready if necessary to provide assistance to citizens. Such attention from the rescue service is totally justified, because the current water temperature in rivers is enough for a seasoned ice-swimmer but too low for a novice. The effects of bathing in the icy water on an unprepared person are difficult to predict.

In total, 12 posts were set up in Transcarpathian region with 47 officers of the State Emergenies Service of Ukraine Office in Transcarpathian region, and 12 vehicles. The rescuers have everything necessary to save lives on the water: lifebelts, ropes, ladders and boats. Also rescuers can provide information on how to dive and advice on the safe conduct on water.
