Transcarpathia at risk: geophysicists warn of earthquake

An earthquake of 8-9 points by the Richter 12-point scale may occur in Western Ukraine at any time.
The mountain range at the junction of the Ukrainian and Romanian Carpathians is almost as active as that in Chile. This has been repeatedly stated by Ukrainian and Romanian experts, the t1.ua informs.
According to the deputy director of the Institute of Geophysics of NAS of Ukraine Oleksandr Kendzer, Transcarpathia may soon be affected by a global earthquake, as this region is located in the area of seismic activity.
Kendzer said that, according to archival research, powerful earthquakes in Transcarpathia occur every 100-120 years, the last one was recorded in 1908.
“Undoubtedly, there is cause for concern because if we look at the map of seismic response in the territory of Ukraine, it shows that there may be global earthquakes in Transcarpathia. And there already have been. Local effects even reached 8 points,” – the geophysicist informed.
