The “White Elephant” observatory on the Mount Pip Ivan in the Carpathians will be restored – officially

The observatory on the Pip Ivan mountain in the Ukrainian Carpathians will be restored, which will contribute to the development of Ukrainian science and the improvement of international relations.

This was stated by Minister of Education and Science Lilia Grinevich, the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine reported.

"This year, we plan to install meteorological equipment and then an astronomical telescope. In addition to astronomical and meteorological observations, it is planned to create a scientific center where the flora and fauna of the Carpathian National Nature Park, the ecology of the region will be explored, etc.," – Grinevich said.

The project is being implemented by Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University in cooperation with the University of Warsaw. After the observatory is restored, students from both universities will be able to practice and conduct researches there.

As it was reported, the astronomical and meteorological observatory on the peak of Pip Ivan was operating in 1938-1941. It is located on the territory of Verkhovyna district of Ivano-Frankivsk region.   Now the premises have been covered with a roof, some of the rooms have been cleared and waiting for refurbishment.
