The petition on the memorial to the victims of the Holodomor has been submitted in Uzhgorod

"Candle of Memory" is the name of the new memorial set on Nezalezhnist embankment in Uzhgorod. The monument is devoted to commemorating the victims of the Holodomor, the author is sculptor Igor Hrechanyk.

And since the day of its erection, there have been heated discussions in the city about the appropriateness of this form of the memorial, its artistic value and how it fits into the environment – the "Czech" neighbourhood Galagov.

Public activist Marina Stashina-Neimet has registered the petition "About the relocation of the monument to the victims of the Holodomor and the terms of the competition". The document, which is posted on the site of the City Council and is already beginning to gather votes, states the following:

"The NGO "Our city – out home" is initiating the relocation of the monument to the victims of the Holodomor. The approval of a new location should take place after consultation with the public.

In addition, we demand the competition for the selection of the model with observance of all relevant procedures and subsequent making of the memorial in accordance with this model."

It should be noted that in addition to many Uzhgorod citizens in social networks, artists, urbanists, as well as public figures, who initiated the monument establishment, have also criticized the memorial. In particular, they emphasize that the model presented at the competition had a different look and implied a smaller size.

At the time of publication, on Monday evening, November 26, 18 people signed the petition.

Recall that on November 24, the monument was solemnly opened, and a rally-requiem was held nearby.
