The new law on the prosecutors has been enacted: the number of prosecutors in Ukraine will decrease

On July 15, the new law on prosecutors, which was signed by the President Petro Poroshenko, came into force.

This was announced today during the plenary session of the Verkhovna Rada by the chairman of the Committee on Legislative Support of Law Enforcement Andriy Kozhemyakin, – the news TV channel "24" reported.

It will finally eliminate the old Soviet-style closed prosecution system, highly centralized, with a strong punitive function, the prosecution, which reflects the non-democratic past and is not compatible with European standards and values that Ukrainian society aspires to,
– Kozhemyakin said.

The new law provides that the total number of prosecutors is 15 thousand people, and on January 1, 2018 it will be reduced to 10 thousand.

From now, the prosecution in Ukraine will be vested with the following functions:

– State accusation in court;

– Representation of citizens or the state in court in cases determined by this law;

– Supervision over the observance of laws by bodies conducting operational-search activity, inquiry and pre-trial investigation;

– Supervision over the observance of laws in the execution of judgments in criminal cases, as well as the application of other measures of coercion related to the restraint of personal liberty of citizens.
