The Mayor: nobody is bulldozing Roma homes (direct speech)

At the end of the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Uzhgorod City Council, the mayor decided to "clarify" the much discussed topic. Recall – recently there has been a scandal regarding unauthorized constructions by the Roma, in particular near the dam.

Pogorelov said: "We have visited Roma places of residence. We saw that the dam is collapsing. This can lead to grave consequences and even death of people or animals in the event of flooding. We gathered, let’s say, the "authorities" of the community, because they have no baron. And they could not explain clearly who is building there and why. And yesterday we gathered the commission, which determined that on Telman street several buildings are located on the territory of the future highway – the road that should be built there.   Regarding the dam, there will be another commission and we will make a decision together with the prosecution, and the court to dismantle the buildings and put them outside the area that potentially can be flooded. I emphasize: no one wants to offend anyone, but there is the law that everybody must abide, and the law forbids to build on the dam, within the streets or squares. And many of the Roma are not even registered. Some of the inhabitants of the neighborhood are registered not in Uzhgorod, but in other districts of Transcarpathia. I hope that the response of the Roma community will be adequate. No one is going to evict them with bulldozers – the city has always been tolerant and we are doing our best to work in the legal field," – the mayor said.
