Ukrainian border guards stopped at the border Hungarian politician Istvan Greja, who is banned from entering Ukraine due to interference by the Hungarian government in local elections, the Yevropeiska Pravda reported.
The Yevropeiska Pravda learned about this from several sources.
On Tuesday morning, Greja arrived at the checkpoint "Luzhanka" in Transcarpathian region, where border guards informed him about the ban on entry and did not allow him to cross the border. The checkpoint "Luzhanka" is the closest to Beregovo, the city with the largest Hungarian community in Ukraine.
After about an hour of waiting, the official returned to Hungary. No official statements have been received from the parties so far.
Greja is the Hungarian Minister’s Plenipotentiary in charge of the development of cooperation between the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg region and Transcarpathia.
Recall that on October 26, Ukraine banned two high-ranking officials from Hungary from entering the country because of the Hungarian government’s endorsement of certain parties during the local election campaign contrary to international norms prohibiting interference in the domestic politics of other states.
Officially, the names were not named, but sources said they were Istvan Greja and Hungary’s secretary of state for national policy in the Hungarian government, Janos Potapy.
On the day of the local elections in Ukraine, October 25, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto posted a call to Ukrainian Hungarians to vote for one of the parties participating in the local elections in Transcarpathia – KMKSZ (Society of Hungarian Culture of Transcarpathia), and also called to support at the election the incumbent mayor of Beregovo, representative of the Hungarian community Zoltan Babjak.
