The bicycle and pedestrian crossing point “Lubnya-Volosate” may open on the border

Members of the Transcarpathian Regional Council appealed to the government with a request to resolve the issue on opening and development of the bicycle and pedestrian checkpoint on the Ukrainian-Polish border "Lubnya – Volosate."

"Transcarpathia is a neighbor to the Subcarpathian Voivodeship of Poland, maintains close partnership with them under the bilateral agreement on cooperation.   However, there is no direct connection across the border with the Subcarpathian Voivodeship.

Despite the repeated attempts to raise this issue by the local authorities on both sides, still there is no checkpoint on the Transcarpathian stretch of Ukrainian-Polish border, and local people and tourists are forced to travel a distance of over 100 kilometers to the nearest checkpoint in Lviv region or make a transit route through Slovakia.

This problem could be solved by opening the crossing point "Lubnya – Volosate."  The opening of the bicycle and pedestrian checkpoint does not require special investments for the border infrastructure.

The relevance of the issue was also noted by the Commission on cross-border cooperation of the Ukrainian-Polish Intergovernmental Coordination Council for regional cooperation (Minutes of April 4, 2013
the city of  Krasiczyn, Poland).

Also, the opening of the crossing point would facilitate the access of Polish citizens to a significant tourist and recreational resources of Transcarpathia, and Ukrainians could become acquainted with the rich historical and cultural heritage of the fraternal country, namely the Bieszczady Park.

The implementation of this initiative will improve the living standards in border areas, efficient use of its natural and tourism resources, improve the social and economic development of communities on both sides of the Polish-Ukrainian border, infrastructure development and investment.

In this regard, Transcarpathian Regional Council appeals to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to initiate intergovernmental consideration of the issue of opening a bicycle and pedestrian checkpoint "Lubnya – Volosate" on Ukrainian-Polish border," – the appeal reads.

The appeal will also be sent to people’s deputies of Ukraine from Transcarpathian region.
