Student accused of an attack on an Uzhgorod resident with acid will be under house arrest

Officers of the regional criminal investigation department together with officers of the Investigation Department of the Transcarpathian regional police identified the man suspected of inflicting intentional bodily harm to a resident of Uzhgorod. Under the procedural control of the prosecutor’s office in the region, the man has been notified of being suspected of committing the crime.

In January of this year, in Uzhgorod, near one of the cafes on 8 Bereznya street, a terrible crime was committed – an unknown person splashed acid on a 27-year-old resident of Uzhgorod. The victim was seriously injured, partially lost his sight. He had several operations done.

The police immediately initiated criminal proceeding under Part 1 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (Intentional grave bodily harm). They did not manage to solve this crime "in hot pursuit", but the search for the attacker never stopped.

Yesterday, December 26, officers of the department for investigation of crimes against human life and health, together with the operatives of the regional criminal investigation, solved the crime.

A 20-year-old native of Tyachiv district, who studies in Uzhgorod, is suspected of inflicting severe bodily harm to the resident of Uzhgorod. Driven by jealousy, the young man decided to retaliate against his imaginary "rival". The plan of the crime was well thought out. He bought sulphatic acid on the Internet. Then he made an appointment with the victim, posing as a client who needed insurance. At about 21.00 on January 25th, when the victim came to the designated place near a cafe on 8 Bereznya street, the attacker approached the young man, splashed acid from the can in his face, and then fled.

The police was searching for the attacker for almost a year. And finally, he has been identified. He faces imprisonment for a term of 5 to 8 years.

Currently, the investigating judge imposed on the suspect house arrest until February 27, 2019.

During the court session, the man denied his involvement in the crime and said that he had never bought the acid.

The circumstances of the offense will be established by the investigators.
