St. Martin in Mukachevo: without geese, but with lanterns (PHOTOS)

Mukachevo celebrated the Day of St. Martin – the patron saint of the city – with a grand celebration on Myr square on Sunday evening. As you know, Martin is depicted on the arms of Mukachevo, and now his holiday, that is celebrated in Europe in November, is the official Day of the city.

On Friday, there was a fair in the city center, a variety of activities culminating with an incredible Lantern procession. Nearly five hundred students walked downtown with handmade lanterns. The procession was headed by Saint Martin on horseback. On the square, there was a theatrical performance of dance groups, knights-reenactors and an amazing fire show. Yulia Mironova visualized the legend of St. Martin by means of sand animation.

However, no geese, that are one of the traditional components of St. Martin holiday, were noticed. But, traditionally, as the last year, the mayor of Mukachevo Zoltan Lendyel sprinkled the ground with his own wine. This action is an attribute of St. Martin holiday in Europe. In November, they give thanks for the harvest and taste the first young wine. The wine itself, and probably geese (roasted) were another, backroom component of the holiday.

See the atmosphere of the celebration on the pictures, more pictures are in the photo report.
