Sculpting classes as therapy. Children with impaired fine motor skills can now improve their development by doing art. In Uzhgorod suburbs, a pottery workshop was opened for them, where children receive help with methods of art therapy.
On Tuesday, December 22, 2015, in the premises of Dravtsi secondary school №16, the Art Therapy Center for children of the city was opened and a master class of clay modeling was held. The event was organized by the Carpathian Agency of Human Rights "Vested" under the project "Establishment of the Center for Art Therapy for Children in Uzhgorod" in partnership with the Department of Education of Uzhgorod City Council with the assistance of the Slovak Agency for International Development and Cooperation.
The project aims to ensure equal access and equal opportunities for children with fine motor disabilities in receiving an education by creating the Art Therapy Center and implementation of methods of art therapy in teaching children with impaired fine motor skills in Uzhgorod.
During the meeting, they discussed the problems of mental retardation pedagogy, especially teaching pottery to children with impaired fine motor skills, and the pottery workshop was officially opened.
According to the psychologist of the city education commission Lilia Nikitina, modeling as the method of art therapy reveals internal hidden resources of a child. Like any adult, a child wants to be heard and understood. Unfortunately, children are not always able to find the right words to describe their internal state, to talk about their experiences, doubts and regrets. Modeling has a beneficial effect on the nervous system of a child: while working, a child calms down, level of anxiety, aggression is reduced, it develops motor skills of hands, and teaches children imaginative and constructive thinking, evokes imagination and interest to learn something new, teaches self-reliance, and perseverance.
