Readers are sounding the alarm: HPS are destroying the ecology of the Carpathians

"We would like to draw your attention to the high-profile case in the village of Turya Polyana in Transcarpathian region regarding the construction of hydroelectric power stations by the monopolist on the mini-HPS market in Transcarpathia the PE "Komertskonsalt" which has disastrous consequences for residents of the village of Turya Polyana and the region in general.

The fact is that this hydroelectric power station was built despite the objections of the residents of Turya Polyana. The hydroelectric power station is supposed to operate ninety days during a year, but the locals say that they hear the hum of turbines continuously throughout the year. The power quality in the village was not improved as the produced electricity is sold to the state. Instead, the company director Andriy Hanzel promises residents of the village prosperity, but outraged villagers claim that instead of the promised prosperity Turya Polyana is in a catastrophic decline.

Over the year the mini-hydroelectric power station has been operating, the river has become very shallow, the water has disappeared from the wells in the center of the village, due to low water level, all fish disappeared from the Shypit river, including the European grayling (Red Book of Ukraine, found only in the mountain rivers of the Carpathians).

Before the construction, there was a fabulous nature on the banks of the Shypit. These places were centers of tourism – big lawns were always dotted with tents. Now, there is only an excavated riverside, and rocks and mud instead of grass.

Therefore we have to ask for your response to address this issue as soon as possible, because if we continue to ignore this issue, the thousand kilowatts power station will completely destroy the ecology of our region.
