Please, help a child

Ivan Kerekanych fell ill with pneumonia when he was 3.5 years old, and has been practically living at the hospital since.

In 2010 after 3 months of treatment of pneumonia, he was sent to a children’s hematology. The diagnosis – acute hybrid leukemia (a rare form of leukemia when both blasts have myeloid and lymphocytic markers). The mother did not believe the doctors, refused from chemotherapy and took the child home. She was hoping for a miracle. Like in a fairy tale… A miracle did not happen. Three months later she brought Ivan to the hospital herself because blasts in the blood reached 96%. For two months Ivan was treated in Mukachevo, and then another 3.5 months in Lviv. The chemotherapy was followed by radiation. Then, a year of maintenance therapy and a gradual return to normal life. In the autumn of this year Ivan was going to begin preparing for school. It did not happen. On September 1, 2013, he had a fever. And on September 4, blood tests again showed blasts and Ivan was admitted to Mukachevo hospital.

Since October 10, Ivan continues treatment in Kyiv Okhmatdyt. Preventive chemotherapy has not yet started because the child has pneumonia. Ivan needs a bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor. A hospital in Budapest, Hungary is ready to provide treatment. The cost of unrelated BMT is 160,000 euros. Ivan’s mother also needs help for the current treatment, not to mention the money to test donors and for further unrelated BMT. 

Mariya, Ivan’s mother provides for the family with two children by herself, she is divorced. Monthly income is 3100 UAH.

It is not enough to cure the child of cancer.
