By September 20, throughout the country, the preventive measures "Attention! Children on the road!" will be held. This was announced by the deputy chief of the Traffic Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Volodymyr Reznikov.
This decision is attributed to the alarming statistics. Only within seven months of this year, 2102 accidents involving children have occurred on Ukrainian roads. 141 children were killed, 2,276 minors received injuries of varying severity.
Most typical traffic offenses by children, leading to accidents, are crossing the street in the wrong place or on wrong traffic signal, running to the roadway directly in front of the car. Also kids often ride down the road on bicycles, mopeds and scooters in violation of the rules – the traffic police reported.
But more often, accidents involving children are caused by drivers. Therefore, the traffic police appeal to motorists requesting to be careful and not to violate traffic rules.
– We ask all drivers of Ukraine on September 1st, the Day of Knowledge, to drive with the low beam headlights on to make car more noticeable on the road, – Volodymyr Reznikov said. – Yes, it is not a mandatory rule but a recommendation. But if we all fulfill it, it will allow us to survive the Day of Knowledge without any accidents. I appeal to all drivers, be as careful and cautious as possible, reduce speed when passing near schools.
