New technologies in geodesy and hydropower energy were discussed in Uzhgorod

The VII International Scientific and Practical Conference "New technologies in geodesy, land surveying and environmental management" was held in Uzhgorod. It was organized by the Geography Department of UzhNU.  They discussed modern CPS and GIS systems and technologies, land management and cadastre in Ukraine, evaluation of land and real estate. And also the prospects of Transcarpathia in the development of alternative energy, including hydropower and solar energy.

  The international conference launched in 2006 expands its geography every year. This time the scientific experts came from many Ukrainian cities and abroad. As Stepan Pop, professor, the Dean of the Faculty of Geography of UzhNU said in his welcoming remark, the conference takes place every two years. "At the conference, we arranged the round tables on two relevant topics: "Space system of protection against emergencies – cross-border system for the prediction of extreme weather events based on the use of satellite technology in Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Ukraine in the framework of the ENPI CBC Programme 2007-2013" dedicated to the grant agreement, executed by UzhNU with partners to create a planetarium, and "Hydropower Energy in Transcarpathia: Status and Prospects." On the second topic, we have some experience and achievements. It refers to intesification of work on the use of renewable energy resources, whereon Transcarpathia ranks first in Ukraine. This is both hydropower and solar energy."

Mykhailo Popovich, the manager of the executive office of the Transcarpathian Regional Council said that in several years Transcarpathia intends to abandon gas all together. "We need to move to renewable energy. One of the sources is small, medium, large hydropower in our region, – Mykhailo Popovich says. – Every 4th river in Ukraine is located in Transcarpathian region. These resources allow us to talk about the huge potential in the region. Also, the use of solar and wind energy can provide a complete energy independence of Transcarpathia. 11-12% of the electricity that we consume is produced here. Out of 10 kW we can export at least 8". As for land management, according to Mykhailo Popovich, there should be a clear scientific and technical basis for the allocation of land. Every community must know what it owns.  

Mykola Khlapuk, the head of the hydraulic engineering department, D.Eng.Sc., prof. (Rivne) noted that Ukraine’s Energy Strategy designed for 30 years would be amended to take into account the existing factors.
