Mukachevo commemorates Holocaust victims

Today, the whole world is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the release of prisoners of one of Nazi Germany’s largest concentration camps – the Auschwitz concentration camp.
The fate of tens of thousands of our Jewish countrymen during the Second World War is linked to this symbol of evil and inhuman suffering. More than 100,000 Transcarpathian Jews, including more than 28,000 from Mukachevo and Mukachevo district, were sent to Auschwitz during May 1944, where almost all were killed, along with more than a million other prisoners who were also killed simply because they were Jewish.
In November 2005, the UN General Assembly decided to celebrate January 27th as the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Relatives and friends of those who are no longer with us, those who were burned in the gas chambers of the concentration camps, as well as representatives of the authorities of our region and the city gathered at the old Jewish cemetery of Mukachevo, near the memorial sign to the Holocaust victims.
The audience honored the Holocaust victims with a prayer and a moment of silence and joined the memorial flash mob: We remember.
