Milan Shashik wants to restore the church at the Physics Faculty of UzhNU

Yesterday, December 3, Mukachevo Greek Catholic Diocese invited journalists of regional media on a tour of the former Basilian Monastery in Uzhgorod.
This fall the building, where now the Physics Faculty of UzhNU is situated, "marked" its 100th anniversary. Since no celebrations on this occasion have been held in Uzhgorod, Bishop Milan decided at least by conducting a tour to remind about the venerable age of the building, which once played an important role in the spiritual life of Transcarpathia.
By the way, the tour began with confusion as the concierge refused to let journalists and priests to the building of the Physics Faculty because they did not have written permission. Only after a call to the Rector the tour held by the historian Yosyp Kobal began. Journalists and clergy walked all the floors and visited the large hall, which used to be the church, painted by Yosyp Bokshay.
Bishop Milan Shashik said that the Mukachevo Greek Catholic diocese had made many attempts to return a former Basilian Monastery in their possession, but the city officials and UzhNU oppose such a step. The only hope left is that they will agree to return the church, because, according to the Bishop Milan, a church in university is a normal practice in many European countries.
After the tour of former monastery journalists were also invited to see how the restoration of the episcopal residence premises is going on. As of now the library of UzhNU has vacated 65% of the rooms, almost all of them are refurbished. Specifically, journalists were shown the luxurious Roman hall with restored paintings, and currently the famous Transcarpathian artist Pavlo Kovacs is restoring the room with 200-year-old paintings.
