Migrants in Transcarpathia are not taught Ukrainian language

On 28 and 30 of July, the Regional Coordinator of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights in Transcarpathian region Oleg Grigoriev and the monitor of the national preventive mechanism Larysa Romanyuk visited the temporary accommodation center for refugees in Perechyn, Transcarpathia.

15 people, including 6 children, permanently live in this center for asylum seekers, designed for simultaneous accommodation for 50 people. At the time of the visit, there were 7 people in the center.

The monitors noted:

– The building of the temporary accommodation center for refugees is provided with all necessary facilities, has a convenient and logical planning;

– The state of the premises is satisfactory;

– Catering for residents of the center is not organized properly. Under the current procedure, rations are handed out once a month. Employees of the center explain that they do not have capability to store food. 

One of the most pressing issues related to the rights of refugees and persons in need of additional protection is their social adaptation in the host country. In accordance with the national law, foreigners, who are in Ukraine and require additional protection, have equal rights with citizens of Ukraine to education and social protection.

Given the above, the issue of regular Ukrainian language courses for both children and adults requires immediate solution. It is necessary to improve the legal culture of foreigners (awareness of their rights and obligations), for their successful social adaptation in Ukraine. According to residents and employees, such work has not been conducted in the temporary accommodation center for refugees, the press service of the Regional Coordinator of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights in Transcarpathian region informs.
