In this way, the male searches for a female to mate. At the beginning of the "bellowing period", single males occupy a certain territory, sometimes – the same lots for several years, and actively call for females with their bellowing. Excited, they hit young trees with the antlers, break branches, tear off bark.

   During this period, they eat little and during the heat lose 30-40 kg from their usual 160-300 kg. Hearing the voice of the male, females gradually join him, forming a kind of harem, which is usually comprised of 2 to 10 females. The larger the harem, the weaker the bellow of the male. Both females and males determine the strength of the opponent by the tone of the bellow – in his prime, the deer has a low and hoarse voice.

But when the rivals do meet, the fight begins. It can be just the demonstration of strength, but it can also be a deadly fight – crack of broken antlers and death of both males. After mating and the autumn heat, young calves join the group to form a so-called mixed herd. A mixed herd of deers is often headed by an old female. In the spring, before the offspring start, such herds break up.
