Hungary may provide reverse gas supply to Ukraine – Media

The Hungarian gas pipeline operator Foldgazszallitas is ready to pump up to 6 billion cubic meters of gas to Ukraine subject to available capacity and valid contract.

This was informed by the representative of the company Edina Lakatos, the "RIA Novosti" reported.

"Starting from March 2013, FGSZ has all the technical and legal pre-conditions for the transportation of natural gas to Ukraine. This transportation is always carried out through a separate pipeline, instead of using "virtual" reverse through the pipeline used for imports from Russian sources," – she said.

Lakatos explained that the throughput of the said separate pipeline is 16.8 million cubic meters per day.

As noted, in order to transfer gas, the supplier must reserve the throughput on the Hungarian-Ukrainian border in accordance with the contract for the transfer of gas with the Ukrainian partner.

In this case, FGSZ will "provide the requested throughput based on the available throughput in accordance with the applicable rules of law."

The physical reverse supply is also possible in Poland, where the pipeline that runs through Hermanovitse can be used to pump gas to the east. Its throughput capacity is 4.8 million cubic meters per day (1.8 billion per year).

For a while this pipeline was used to supply gas from the German RWE. In 2014, according to the information system of the Polish gas pipeline operator GAZ-SYSTEM, the pipeline was not used.
