These days, Hungarians of Transcarpathia are honoring the memory of their countrymen, who died at the end of the Second World War in Stalin’s camps, the Zakarpattya.online reports.
In the autumn of 1944, when the Soviet army came to Transcarpathia, all men of Hungarian and German nationalities aged 18 to 50 were told to immediately report for participation in reconstruction works.
Thus, according to historical data, in one month, 18-20 thousand Transcarpathians were taken to concentration camps located across the USSR. One third of them never returned home.
In Beregovo, the Society of Hungarian Intelligentsia of Transcarpathia organized an international scientific conference with the participation of well-known researchers on this topic.
An ecumenical worship was held in the Reformed Church. After that, there was a procession to the monument to the victims of the Stalinist repressions with the participation of clergymen of all religions.
The celebrations finished with the laying of candles to the monument.
