High Specialized Court of Ukraine imprisoned organizers of illegal migrants smuggling

High Specialized Court of Ukraine upheld the verdict of the Court of Appeal in Transcarpathian region against two local residents who in 2011 organized the illegal crossing of the state border of Ukraine for 9 citizens of Afghanistan.

It was established that 7 Transcarpathians, including the now former border guard and traffic policeman, were involved in the illegal activities.

In early 2011, the offenders met nine illegal immigrants near the village of Znyatsevo in Mukachevo district. They brought them to the shelter, provided by one of the accomplices. They smuggled small groups of illegal immigrants across the Ukrainian-Hungarian border bypassing checkpoints.

In late January 2011 near the village of Velyka Dobron in Uzhgorod district, officers of Security Service of Ukraine in Transcarpathian region detained two cars with 4 citizens of Ukraine and 5 citizens of Afghanistan.

         At the same time, law enforcement officers found other participants of these illegal activities. The investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine Office in Transcarpathian region opened a criminal case against the perpetrators under Part 2 of Art.332 (illegal transportation of persons across the state border of Ukraine committed by previous concert by a group of persons) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

In early 2012, the Court of Appeal in Transcarpathian region upheld the sentence against the five defendants appointed by Uzhgorod City and District Court in the form of 3 years imprisonment with a probation period of 1 to 3 years to each.

The organizer of the illegal transportation of illegal immigrants across the state border of Ukraine was sentenced by High Specialized Court of Ukraine to

3 years inmprisonment, and his assistant – to 3 years and 1 month imprisonment.
