Great Slavonic sccholar Venelin has returned to his Motherland

September 22 the city of Svalyava on Transcarpathia celebrated the 776 anniversary of its foundation. On this occasion, the city unveiled a monument to the famous scientist, Slavistic scholar, born in Svalyava district – Yuri Venelin-Hutsa. The memorial monument of stone, decorated with a bronze portrait of the scientist, has been created through the joint efforts of local authorities and communities. 

 Note: Venelin (real name – Hutsa) Yuri Ivanovich was born in 1802, in the village of Velyka Tybava, now Tybava, of Svalyava district in Transcarpathian region. Ukrainian and Russian historian, linguist, ethnographer, folklorist. One of the founders of Slavic studies in Russia. He was a member of the Moscow Society of History and Antiquities at Moscow University.
