Galagov neighbourhood in Uzhgorod may be included to the UNESCO World Heritage List

At least Uzhgorod urbanists from the project devoted to the modernism style in urban construction believe in it.

"Friends, we have long strived for the legacy of modernist architecture in Uzhgorod to be recognized worldwide. Studying the documentation and drawings in the State Archives in the city of Beregovo; discovering new names for you and ourselves; noting a considerable interest of foreign scholars in our architecture; comparing with other similar buildings and urban planning ensembles abroad; we have come to the conclusion that the modernism architecture in Uzhgorod, in particular the Small Galagov Complex and some of the prominent sites, have all the chances to be included to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Small Galagov is a unique urban planning complex in its representativeness with all the functional diversity of the Eastern European modernism architecture, including 15 administrative buildings and 10 residential facilities.

Modernism in Uzhgorod is represented by practically all styles that were popular in the territory of the First Czechoslovak Republic: Art Deco, Cubism, RondoCubism, Traditionalism, Purism, Expressionism, Neoclassicism and Functionalism.

According to the World Heritage List, the Government and Residential Complex Small Galagov with individual buildings of the interwar period outside of it can be nominated simultaneously for two criteria.

What will the inclusion of the Small Galagov into the UNESCO World Heritage List give the city? It is not only the prestige and the maximum level of protection for the unique architectural complex. This status, along with a well-designed promotional strategy, is a direct way to increase tourist traffic, investment and small business development.

The path of preparation of Uzhgorod objects of modernism architecture for the nomination is long and complicated, but we are ready for it."
