French language will be promoted in Transcarpathia

A roundtable discussion on the promotion and study of the French language in Transcarpathian schools will soon be held in Uzhgorod. This is the initiative of Mykhailo Roshko, the dean of the foreign language faculty of Uzhgorod National University. This was discussed at the meeting of the Academic Council.

"The interest in learning French today in the region is low," – the scholar says. The number of those wishing to learn German is also less than before, because the emphasis in schools is on English.
According to the dean, this academic year, compared to previous ones, the enrollment in undergraduate and graduate department of the foreign language faculty has increased. It was possible due to the fact that an additional qualification – second foreign language – was introduced.
"The faculty should have active international relations, but linguists are less interesting for foreign partners than doctors, physics, political scientists – Mykhailo Roshko says. – The German department has the best achievements in this area. Each year, ten exchange students go to the city of Darmstadt, and teachers from Austria and Germany come to UzhNU." Also there is no shortage of teachers from the US and the UK in the university.
But there is a need to upgrade the technical equipment. The faculty needs a new language laboratory, which is necessary for practical training in a foreign language.  Another problem is the work of the faculty in two shifts.  Therefore, foreign linguists are waiting for the completion of the new building to increase their classroom fund.
