Following the meeting of the Crisis Committee under the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine recommended all higher education and all other educational institutions subordinate to local self-government bodies to be closed from March 2 to March 7 inclusive.

However, the head of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration Hennadiy Moskal on his official website assured that all educational institutions of Transcarpathia will work as usual, explaining:

– Transcarpathian region will not suspend the work of educational institutions because of gas shortage due to the Gazprom’s failure to fulfill its obligations. – First of all, our region consumes the least amount of gas in Ukraine, and part of Transcarpathia is not gasified at all. Secondly, almost 85 percent of the gas consumers in the region are households. Public institutions and organizations (including educational facilities) consume only 5.3 percent of gas. Thirdly, Transcarpathia hasn’t had centralized heat supply for a long time, and in this regard our region is an example for the whole of Ukraine. Fourthly, in recent years, acting on behalf of the government, we have transferred many social facilities to alternative types of heating (primarily firewood), because we knew that Russia could at any moment shut the gas valve, as it did on several occasions.

Therefore, in Transcarpathia, educational institutions will not be closed, except for those districts where a quarantine due to acute respiratory viral infections was introduced.

In addition, we remind you that Saturday, March 3 in Transcarpathia is a normal working day instead of Friday, March 9, which, as stated in the explanatory note of the Cabinet of Ministers dd. January 11, 2018, will create favorable conditions for Ukrainians to celebrate the International Women’s Day, and will promote the rational use of working time.
