Diphtheria in the city: How to protect yourself?

According to the Health Department of Uzhgorod City Council, a student of UzhNU was confirmed having diphtheria, he was hospitalized in the regional infectious hospital. Yesterday, two more students who were in contact with the patient were hospitalized. During the prophylactic examination of the students who were in contact with the patients, 12 carriers of the toxigenic strain of the diphtheria pathogen were identified. Before this incident, diphtheria was recorded in Uzhgorod 10 years ago.
The Health Department of Uzhgorod City Council together with the Uzhgorod City Regional Branch of the State Institution “Transcarpathian Laboratory Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine” on October 22, 2019 issued an order “On increasing alertness regarding diphtheria morbidity in Uzhgorod”, which defines the actions of medical personnel in case of detection of diphtheria disease among the population.
Due to the current diphtheria situation in the city, the Health Department of the Uzhgorod City Council initiated a meeting of the city anti-epidemic commission on Thursday, October 24, at which they plan to hear information about the diphtheria epidemic in the city, to approve anti-epidemic measures and a plan of preventive measures in order to prevent aggravation of diphtheria epidemic in the city.
The only way to protect yourself from diphtheria and prevent the development of dangerous complications is vaccination for children and revaccination for adults. In Uzhgorod, you can get vaccinated for free at your family doctor in general practice clinics, there are enough vaccines in the city.
