Court imprisoned a Khust doctor for the death of a woman in labor

This was reported by the press service of the Prosecutor’s Office in Transcarpathia region.

The woman died in 2017, the newborn girl survived. She was the third child in the family that lost a mother.

The Lviv Court of Appeal upheld the verdict of the Tyachiv District Court’s in the case of a doctor at the maternity ward of the Khust District Hospital for improper performance of professional duties. According to the report, the suspect negligently performed his duties and, while delivering a patient’s baby, failed to prevent severe blood loss, which led to the death of the woman.

The doctor was found guilty of improper performance of professional duties (Part 1 of Article 140 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and sentenced to the most severe punishment – 1 year in prison.

In addition, the doctor and Khust District Hospital must pay the victims 400,000 hryvnias in non-pecuniary damage, 45.3 thousand hryvnias in material damages, and more than 31,000 hryvnias in damages caused by the death of the mother to her minor children. The doctor is also obliged to pay 1/4 of the salary to support three children of the deceased mother. The verdict came into force.
