Commemorative postage stamp for the International Roma Day

In celebration of the International Roma Day, the first postage stamp dedicated to the Roma is put into circulation. April 8 is a significant date in the life of 12 million Roma in the world. The release of this stamp is a kind of recognition of the role of Roma in the historical process.

Today, the first of a planned series of stamps illustrating the history of Roma comes into circulation. After all, the celebration of the International Roma Day is a recognized symbol by which Roma feel their importance in enriching the world cultural treasury and pride for themselves.

The portrait of a Roma woman is featured on the stamp so that the cliches use in the language of hate and xenophobic attitudes will be replaced with so-called labels of respect and dignity.

The image of a Roma woman, which is depicted on the stamp, was created by joint efforts of those who care about the Roma: "Discussions about how the Roma woman should look like lasted several days – the head of the Foundation "Rozvytok" Oleg Grigoriev says. – After choosing several sketches, we consulted with Roma. On the first stamp, we decided to portray the image of a Roma woman that has absorbed all the best that is associated with the melodious soul of the Roma people. Because the Roma woman, who adorns the stamp, has to appeal to: culture, customs and history, that every minority has and that is the essence every nation’s identity."
