Catching of crayfish in Transcarpathia will be prohibited

From August 20 to September 30, 2018, the summer and autumn ban on the catching of crayfish will be in place in Transcarpathian region. It will contribute to the conservation and protection of the crayfish population, the State Fisheries Agency informs.

The main purpose of the ban is to protect the arthropods during the second molting, when they are most vulnerable. Crayfish molting occurs once or twice a year in adult individuals, and in the course of growth and development in young ones. It lasts up to 24 hours. However, the period of formation and strengthening of a new shell can last up to one and a half month. During this time, the ban on catching of crayfish is in place.

It is forbidden to catch these river animals during dark time (later than an hour after sunset and earlier than an hour before sunrise) using light. Administrative liability is provided for exceeding the daily limit of catching crayfish under Part 4 of Art 85 of the CAO (fine of 340 to 680 UAH). In addition, the offender will have to pay damages in the amount of 25.5 UAH for each illegally caught crayfish.
