At the checkpoint "Luzhanka-Beregsurany", on the Hungarian side, the number of cars abandoned by their owners is increasing. Some of them have already been looted. Locals say that this has been going on for several years, the Mukachevo.net reported.
Cars are of different types – from small to mini-buses. Most of them have Hungarian or Polish license plates, sometimes German. On some of them, there are signs of burglary or vandalism – broken glass, removed wheels, steering wheel, dashboard, and so on.
– Drivers have been leaving cars near the cafe "Hatar" ("Border" – Hung.) or just in the field for a long time. Usually for a few days. For example, if there are some problems with documents. But some have been there for years. They are disassembled for spare parts. It is unknown who does it – perhaps local people. Although it is strange, after all, the office of the border police is nearby, everything is captured by cameras. But the parking lot is illegal, so nobody is watching, – carrier from Beregovo Istvan, who crosses the border almost every day, says.
At present, the amount of cars has increased to almost a hundred. This is probably due to new laws that made it impossible to import cars with foreign registration in transit mode.
Let’s remind, that now there are only three options for import of cars with EU license plates into Ukraine. A non-resident (that is, a person with other nationality) has the right to temporarily import a car for up to 1 year or use transit. Citizens of Ukraine who live or work abroad can apply for consular registration and receive the right to bring a car to Ukraine for up to 60 days during a year.
The rest have no other way – they need to clear a car (or take it abroad). It is not even possible to disassemble a car for spare parts, it is punishable by a fine – up to 170 thousand hryvnias.
New fines will come into force 180 days after the publication of the law, that is, at the end of May 2019.
