A memorial to soldiers killed in World War I will be established at the military cemetery in the “Shakhta”

At the military cemetery in the "Shakhta" neighborhood in Uzhgorod, workers of the municipal utility are removing shrubs, clearing the area, the official website of Uzhgorod city council informs.

As you know, for several years now, they have been talking about restoration of this old cemetery. It is planned to establish a memorial to soldiers killed in the First World War there.

According to researchers of the Military Archives in Prague, there is the detailed information about more than a thousand people buried there. Those are soldiers of 12 countries: Czechoslovaks, Austrians, Italians, Hungarians, Germans, Poles, Romanians, Russians, Yugoslavs. The oldest graves date from 1914, the most recent from the Second World War years. There are even the graves of two women from different countries. There is also a small sector of the graves in the interwar period.

Partners of Transcarpathia from Vysocina region take part in the restoration of the cemetery, the project is co-financed by the Ministry of Defence of the Czech Republic. In early October, Uzhgorod Mayor Bohdan Andriyiv had a meeting with Czech partners on this matter.

This is how the cleared areas and those, where work is yet to be done, look now.
