A former taxman was convicted for 40,000 UAH bribe

The judgment of Uzhgorod city and district court against the former head of a department of the State Tax Service in Transcarpathia, who demanded and received from a local private entrepreneur 40,000 UAH, has entered into force.

At the end of 2012, the personnel of the department, headed by the now former tax officer, conducted checks on compliance with tax laws in a number of commercial establishments owned by a local entrepreneur. During one of them, the auditors found minor violations which should have been punished with a fine of 80 to 120 thousand hryvnias.

During a meeting with the owner of the facility, the head of the cash payment control department demanded from the private entrepreneur 40,000 UAH in return for lowering the size of penalties imposed on the owner to 20,000 UAH, and the release from inspections of his other retail establishments throughout the year.

Last year, on December 14, in the village of Storozhnytsya in Uzhgorod district, the taxman was detained by the officers of the Security Service of Ukraine in the car during the receipt of the full amount of bribe from the private entrepreneur.

Uzhgorod City and District Court found the former tax officer guilty of an offense under Part 3 of Art.368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and sentenced him to five years imprisonment with appointment of 3 years probationary term. The former tax officer is also denied the right to hold positions related to the implementation of organizational-administrative and administrative-economic functions of law enforcement and government agencies for 3 years.

According to Art.54 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the convict is denied special title – 3 rank Tax Service Advisor.
