4 years in prison for weapons smuggling

Uzhgorod City Court convicted a 32-year-old native of Lviv, who in May 2012 attempted to illegally transport firearms and ammunition across the customs border of Ukraine.

A citizen of Ukraine, who had long lived in Portugal, in May last year, was visiting his parents in Lviv and allegedly found a 32-caliber revolver and 21 cartridges hear his parents’ house. Returning to Portugal by his own car, the man decided to take the finding with him. The 32-year-old dodger hid the revolver in a niche under the passenger seat, and ammunition inside socks, among other things in his traveling bag. 

At the crossing point "Tisa" of the Chop customs during the joint border and customs inspection of the vehicle, the police found and seized the revolver and ammunition. The examination confirmed that the revolver was a firearm suitable for firing. Investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine in Transcarpathian region opened a criminal case against the Lviv citizen under Part 1 of Art.201 (smuggling) and Part 1 of Art. 263 (unlawful use of firearms, ammunition or explosives) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The detainee explained that he intended to keep the gun and ammunition.  Uzhgorod District Court sentenced the offender to 4 years imprisonment with probationary period of 2 years.
