The news about the discovery of the dismembered body of a woman near Vinogradiv in July last year agitated all of Transcarpathia. A passer-by who came to the river to fish, found a woman body without head and limbs. The same day, Vynogradiv, Mukachevo and Irshava police began searching persons involved in the gruesome murder. In four days the policemen managed to identify the murdered person, and her family members who denied the old woman the chance to die a natural death.
From a wealthy lady to unwanted old woman
In recent years the Klyus family in the village of Sasovo in Vynogradiv district has had serious problems. The 70-year-old grandmother, who used to work as a conductor on international routes, was once a wealthy lady. She raised the only daughter and the grandson, who grew up in a family of women without a father. Once wealthy woman managed to build a three-storey house, where the family have lived until recently. But, according to neighbors and relatives the old woman had ill, and even despotic nature. She let into the house neither relatives, nor neighbors, much less acquaintances. She also forbade her 38-year-old daughter Halyna and 14-year-old grandson Vasyl to mix with villagers or relatives. Because of that quarrels between the family members occured rather often.
On that July morning Vasyl again demanded money from the grandmother, because all three lived on her pension. Sickly grandmother, who already, according to relatives, disliked the grandson, refused him. A quarrel arose between them. Then the angry guy punched the grandmother in the chest. Then he ran into the yard, grabbed a rock and started to beat the old woman more.
Old woman’s daughter, Halyna, all that time was busy in the yard, and did not react to the already habitual quarrel between her son and mother. When she came into the house and saw the bloody woman who was barely breathing, she did not even run for help.
Maternal love is blind
The 38-year-old daughter did not even think to call an ambulance, not to mention the police. Despite everything she wanted to protect her son from justice and conceal the evidence.
The woman first had the idea to cook the mother’s body and feed it to the dogs. But they did not find a vessel big enough in the house, so they decided to cut the body with a saw and carry it outside the village.
The next morning after the murder of the grandmother, the mother and the son continued to live a usual life. When neighbors asked where grandmother Hanna was, both claimed that she had left to Kyiv to transfer pension. But when the water in the Tisa receded, the remains of the woman were found by a passer-by, who reported it to law enforcement authorities. The rest was just a matter of time.
A just punishment for the crime
The bloody murder was investigated by the experienced and professional senior investigator of the Transcarpathian police Oksana Danko. According to the investigator, when Halyna and her son were brought to the police station in Vinogradiv, at first the woman tried to lie that her mother was in Kyiv. But then she candidly confessed the crime. The 14-year-old boy also confessed, although in his eyes there was not much regret for the deed.
Given the severity of the crime and the age of the minor, Vinogradiv City Court sentenced Vasyl to 8 years of imprisonment. His mother, who was prosecuted under the article 135 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine "Leaving in danger" has been sentenced to 2 years imprisonment.
