Will the theater be hidden behind a high-rise building?

The controversy surrounding another conflict zone of Uzhgorod – the square in front of the Transcarpathian Regional Drama Theater on Lev Tolstoy street, or rather the land plot on Mostovy lane – seems to have reached the climax.

The survey conducted by the Uzhgorod.in showed that Uzhgorod residents are tired of modern shopping centers, residential buildings; residents of Uzhgorod still remain cultural gourmets, and 96% of respondents would like to see a park with a fountain in front of the theater.

However, the owners of the land – Ivan Tehza and Volodymyr Yursa – refused to sell the land back to Uzhgorod, and two years ago it became known that, according to submitted documents, the owner planned to build there an office building with an underground parking lot for 40 cars.

On April 11 of this year, the draft decision "On closed architectural contest on Mostovy lane" was published on the site of Uzhgorod City Council.

The commissioner and organizer of the contest is the "Continent Invest Group" LLC.

The purpose of the contest is to determine the best project of the complex development of Mostovy lane in the central part of the city, in accordance with the principles of sustainable development and the main tendencies of development of small and medium-sized cities of Western Europe, which will set an example for further implementation of this principle in urban planning practice in Uzhgorod", – the draft decision of the executive committee reads.

The contest is closed. Individual certified architects, authors’ groups, architectural bureaus having the appropriate professional experience, who have received invitations from the commissioner, can take part in it.

As you know, three sites on Mostovy lane (the area in front of the Transcarpathian Regional Music and Drama Theater) were sold at the auction "for the purpose of commercial activity" in July 2009 when Serhiy Ratushniak was the mayor.
