One international train Kyiv-Moscow brings the Ukrzaliznytsya more revenue than the 5 most profitable trains running within Ukraine together.

This is evidenced by data from the Ukrzaliznytsya (UZ), which the company provided at the request of the LIGA.net.

The short summary is as follows: the train Kyiv-Moscow is the most profitable, Uzhgorod – Lysychansk is the most unprofitable.

Over the past year, passenger transportation brought the UZ about UAH 10 billion in losses. The railway company maintains non-profitable destinations at the expense of freight transportation.

There are also profitable routes.

The most profitable international passenger transportation destination is Moscow. Thus, for the first half of 2018, the largest revenue was made by the train N6 / 7 Kyiv-Moscow – UAH 64.5 million.

Trains Kyiv – Odesa, Kyiv – Kharkiv, Lviv – Odesa, Kyiv – Novooleksiyivka and Kyiv – Ivano-Frankivsk for the same period made only UAH 61.1 million in total.

The Minister of Infrastructure Volodymyr Omelyan on August 6 proposed to terminate passenger railway communication with Russia, in response to Russia’s actions in the Azov Sea and on the Donbas. The Ministry of Infrastructure has already prepared the relevant decision, but it has not yet been submitted for consideration by the government.  

The number of loss-making trains in the UZ system is much higher than that of profitable ones. Leaders in losses are: Uzhgorod – Lysychansk, Mariupol – Lviv, Mykolayiv – Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv – Mariupol and Lysychansk – Khmelnytsky.
