Tomorrow, April 24, in Uzhgorod, there will the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide by the Ottoman Empire. This was announced by a representative of the Armenian Culture Society of Transcarpathia "Ararat" Vanush Gasparyan. on his Facebook page.

Tomorrow, 24.04.2015, at 19:00, in the regional center of Transcarpathia, on the square in front of the regional drama theater, the Armenian community of Transcarpathia organizes a photo exhibition dedicated to the memory of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

This date has a special memorable place not only in the history of the Armenian Genocide, but also in the history of the Armenian people as a whole, the message states. It is on this day, in 1915, the government of the Ottoman Empire in Constantinople began mass arrests of Armenian intellectual, religious, economic and political elite, which led to the complete destruction of an entire galaxy of outstanding figures of Armenian culture by their physical destruction and deportation, including the displacement of the civilian population under conditions that lead to certain death.

In the Joint Declaration of Allies (Great Britain, France and Russia) dd. May 24, 1915, the mass killings of Armenians for the first time in history were recognized as a crime against humanity. Soon, the Armenian genocide was officially recognized by many countries, and on April 16 this year – by the European Parliament. In Ukraine, the genocide was recognized only at the local level by individual cities, including Uzhgorod, by the decision of the City Council in 2010.

In addition, the memorial of the 1915 Armenian genocide will be installed in Uzhgorod, near the Regional Drama Theater.

Recall that the Armenian community has always been an active and engaged participant in the life of the city and the region. At the same time, they have alsways been trying to preserve their national identity.
