The Ukrainian law on education is contrary to international conventions – Hungarian minister

The Ukrainian law on education contradicts many international conventions and commitments that Ukraine has assumed in relation to European states.

This was stated the Minister of Human Resources of Hungary Zoltan Balog on the government’s website.

Balog noted that the law contradicts Ukraine’s obligation to provide education in mother tongue at all levels of education.

"Ukraine’s leadership leads the country not to Europe, it leads its country to a standstill," the statement reads.

Balog noted that Hungary has a constitutional obligation to support national minorities, including Hungarians, at all relevant international forums.

"The Minister of Human Resources encourages the Minister of Education of Ukraine to begin negotiations on the adopted law with representatives of Transcarpathian Hungarian communities that are excluded from the legislative process. The Government of Hungary is still ready to negotiate with Ukraine on fair ethnic education," the statement reads.
