On Sunday, July 16, at 18.00, the Transcarpathian Regional Academic Music and Drama Theater closes its season with the premiere of the Ukrainian operetta "Sharika".  Its author is a renowned playwright and composer Yaroslav Barnych that has a direct relevance to Transcarpathia.

He was born in 1906 in Ivano-Frankivsk region, in the family of school headmaster. He always loved music. In 1914, he volunteered to Ukrainian Sich Riflemen, and even organized a stringed quartet there. In 1924, he graduated from the Higher Institute of Music in Lviv and at the invitation of the Transcarpathian Society "Prosvita" moved to Uzhgorod to manage local theater orchestra. There, he was working successfully for a few years and then moved to Berlin.

In 1930s, Yaroslav Barnych wrote several operettas which still run successfully in Ukrainian theaters. In particular, he is the author of the well-known hit "Hutsul Girl Ksenya." After the World War II he went overseas, which led to the imposition of the ban on his works in Soviet times.

The most famous operettas by Yaroslav Barnych are "Sharika" and "Hutsul Girl Ksenya." "Sharika" tells about the Sich Riflemen in Transcarpathia. The second act of the play is set in Khust, where a Ukrainian captain falls in love with a local Hungarian girl named Sharika, and this love overcomes all obstacles.
