What in Uzhgorod reminds of the First World War one hundred years later… (PHOTOS)

One hundred years ago, on August 1, Germany declared war on Russia. The reason was the murder of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand – the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne – on June 28. Transcarpathia was then under the crown of this empire. Moreover, the Archduke passed our land on his way to Serbia, where he was shot…

Despite the fact that the 66th Infantry Regiment stationed in the "front-line" Uzhgorod, not that many memorials of that period in history have been preserved in the city.    

"One of the well-known ones – historian Ludwig Philip said – is the memorial on Radvantka, the burial place of the neighbourhood residents killed in battles in 1914-1918. The modern Regional Clinical Hospital built in 1913 is another significant place. In the hospital, they were treating severely wounded soldiers. The Intercession Church on Pravoslavna embankment, though built much later – in 1930, but at the expense of "White Guard emigres" to pay homage to "fellow Russians" who were killed in the battles. And, of course, recently "ennobled" cemetery "in the Shakhta", where participants of two world wars are buried, is a special place. But it requires further research" – the scholar said.

One of the unknown places that remind of the tragic events of the early 20th century is the obelisk erected by Czechs in honor of victims of the World War II, which the Soviets remade into a monument to Karl Marx.  

"Of course, certain facts, including circulars, orders, personal cards of soldiers, the bishop’s appeal to the people… can be found in the regional archives, – the director of the institution Mykhailo Misyuk said – For example, "The telegram about the detention of Russian prisoners of war who were hiding in the Carpathian Mountains" or "Letters of the military high command to declare martial law in the Uzhanska zhupa…" But those are documents… Detailed plans of "operations" should be sought in Budapest or Vienna."

There is nothing to add… Even one century after the First World War, there is a lot of "white spots" that are still waiting to be filled with specific data…
