In July, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine gave consent to the appointment of the Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Uzhgorod – this is what the Ministry informed in response to the request for information from uzhgorod.in. The ministry did not provide answers about the candidacy for the consul.
The Ministry has informed the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Ukraine on the approval of the candidacy. The Honorary Consul will be allowed to carry out their functions in Uzhgorod after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has provided the appropriate exequatur (the permission of the state to the exercise of consular functions by a certain person in a certain consular district).
The opening of the Honorary Consulate of the Czech Republic in Uzhgorod was agreed two years ago.
Under international law, honorary consuls and consular posts headed by them are a special institution in consular law. The main purpose of their creation and activity is representation of the state and protection of its citizens in a certain region of the state where there is no consulate staff, but there is a need to maintain and develop bilateral relations. Honorary consul of any state in our country can only be a citizen of Ukraine, who is not a public official, has a certain influence in society and is able to maintain the office at their own expense. However, honorary consulate has no right to issue visas.
