For the seventh time the town of Volovets gathered kolomyika singers for the festival "Ringing pearls of the Verkhovyna". It brought together dozens folk groups from all over Transcarpathia, to compete for the best performance of kolomiykas – simple verses which are often improvized depending on the event or situation.
Antonina Durda works at the school of arts in the village of Pryborzhavske. Although, singing is not her specialty. Mrs. Antonina is a master of ceramics. She brought to festival in Volovets her handmade whistles.
Antonina Durda’s whistles, dolls and one or two tents with authentic handmade products could be be found at the festival in Volovets. All other souvenir stalls (there were about a dozen of them) were filled to the brim with products from neighboring Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv regions.
At the festival of kolomiykas, the ensemble of Novobarovo grandmothers, which was formed two years ago, performed for the first time. The women came from the village of Novobarovo in Tyachiv district. The band manager Valentyna Lar said that young people today are not very interested in folk songs, but Novobarovo singers have not abandoned the hope to attract youth to singing. Ms. Valentyna noted that they sing only old kolomyikas, and do not make up new ones.
At the festival in Volovets we were able to hear all kinds of kolomyikas. And meet people, who preserve folklore in their memory.
