"The building of the "Barn and Cellar" of the eighteenth century is a monument of national importance and it can only be either restored or neglected and there is no third option" – a reader comments on the message posted by Uzhgorod designer and the activist protector of Uzhgorod architectural identity Oleg Olashyn on his profile in Facebook.
The architect, who put the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Kyiv under the threat of exclusion from the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, got to Uzhgorod. The next step is the monument of national importance – the wine cellar of the XVIII century – commonly known as the "Owl’s Nest" – he writes. And shows the project of Janos Vih. Who, by the way, is from Uzhgorod and an honored architect of Ukraine. In the community for discussion of the architectural face of Uzhgorod people complain – "How can anyone from Uzhgorod, who loves and respects their city, have such ideas? It is the monument of national importance."
Now they are discussing the reconstruction of Narodna Square, which is in Halahov district that is an Uzhgorod architectural gem and should not be subject to significant changes, maintaining its authenticity. However, the project of the "improvement" is actively promoted by the regional governor Oleksandr Ledyda.
